Elena Verde - Urban Micro Tips founder and lead editor

Meet Elena Verde

I’m Elena Verde, the founder and lead editor of Urban Micro Tips. For over a decade, I’ve been obsessed with a single question: How do you live a sustainable, green life when you rent a flat with no garden?

My background is in environmental science, and I’ve applied that precision to small-space living since 2013 — across nine apartments in six cities. I’ve tested weight-restricted balcony setups in Berlin, north-facing herb gardens in London, and zero-waste routines in 28 m² studios in Amsterdam.

Credentials

  • 200+ guides published on balcony gardening, renter-friendly setups, zero-waste routines, and small-space living — all personally tested in real apartments.
  • Built the 3D Balcony Plant Calculator — the only free tool that checks structural load while planning your balcony layout.
  • Environmental science background: every recommendation is measured for real impact, not just labelled “eco-friendly”.
  • Renter-first rule: if it requires drilling, painting, or risks your deposit — it doesn’t go on this site.

Who This Site Is For

Urban Micro Tips is written for city renters — people living in apartments, flats, and studio units who don’t own their space, can’t make permanent changes, and work with limited square footage.

You’re in the right place if…

  • You rent and can’t make permanent changes to your home
  • Your balcony is small, north-facing, or has weight restrictions
  • You want to grow herbs or food without a garden
  • You’re reducing waste without a compost bin or a car
  • You’ve moved cities and need practical, deposit-safe solutions fast

Why this site exists

Urban Micro Tips started as a personal notes folder — things Elena figured out the hard way: the soil mix that actually works in a weight-restricted planter, which herbs survive a north-facing balcony in winter, how to compost in 6 m² without problems.

After building the 3D Balcony Plant Calculator to answer a question no existing tool addressed — “will my balcony actually hold this weight?” — it became clear that urban renters needed a resource that treated small-space living as a practical problem, not a lifestyle aesthetic. That’s what this site is.

The Urban Micro Tips Philosophy

Living Small, Growing Big

Space is a luxury, but creativity is infinite. We believe that even a 2-square-meter balcony can provide a harvest of herbs and a sanctuary of peace.

Zero Waste, Zero Fuss

Sustainability shouldn’t be a part-time job. We focus on low-maintenance, high-impact routines that fit into a busy city schedule.

Our Commitment to Accuracy

Every article on Urban Micro Tips is researched and vetted for technical accuracy. We prioritize structural safety (balcony weight limits) and botanical health above all else. If we wouldn’t trust it in our own 40-square-meter apartment, we won’t recommend it in yours. See our Editorial Policy for full details.
